“You know what I’ve been thinking a lot about?”
“What?”
“You know that phrase - ‘Like a knife through butter’?
“Yeah. What about it?”
“Well, you know it’s supposed to signify something happening very naturally and easily, but what if the butter is hard, and the knife is hardly going through it at all. You might even need the microwave to soften the butter before you can get anywhere. Well then, in that scenario - with the hard butter and the knife struggling to go through it - the expression doesn’t ring through at all, does it, in terms of what it’s meant to mean?”
“I suppose it doesn’t. I can see where you’re coming from. So what do you want to do about it?”
“I don’t know. But it’s been bothering me.”
“I can empathise with you.”
