“Why are modern liberals called liberal? They seem completely totalitarian to me. What is it they’re supposed to be liberal about?”
“Well, their ideal is totalitarianism, the totalitarian state, but they are very liberal about what means they are willing to use to get to that end.”
“Oh.”
“So like the way they used to be seemingly devoted to the class struggle - that was supposedly their entire reason for being. But then overnight they ditched that as unprofitable, and without even a glance backwards moved onto gender, race, climate, whatever. The issues aren’t important. They are just the means to the end, and so like I said these totalitarian “liberals” are very liberal about how to get to that desired end.”
“But most people who consider themselves liberals aren’t consciously looking to that end though, are they?”
“Most of them of course haven’t a clue what the end is, but they don’t need to, and it’s actually much better that they don’t know, as then the inner logic of these ideas is free to work through them unimpeded. So they’re for example willing to be completely totalitarian, not just theoretically but in practice - for instance right the way down to the camps and beyond - whilst thinking that they’re the opposite, that they’re liberal! If they knew they were totalitarian, they mightn’t be willing to be so useful.”
