Or maybe Hemingway had a major depressive disorder, made worse by drink which led to his suicide.
I'm just a kind of artistic eavesdropper on the given conversation, but I think the individual, particularly a fine artist like Hemingway, can't be reduced too concisely to one or two elements. I've read very little of him but seemingly his writing had become of much lesser quality in time.
I suppose the greatest artists, for whatever reasons, never exhaust themselves & life.
He wrote in a "newspaper reporting style". Short and to the point which was considered revolutionary in its day. He avoided the usual flowery writing. My guess is that he had a long history of drinking combined with a genetic disposition for depression and suicide. It proved a lethal combination. He may have wanted to avoid old age.
Suicide is indeed one of the most successful of methods in avoiding old age.
