Alleviating
A great, and perhaps the greatest, merit of objects such as watches and mobile phones is that their presence offers nervous people an escape route, something to look at, to absorb their attention in ardently focused activity, when finding themselves in awkward situations such as, for example, someone walking towards them along a quiet footpath.

i find people tend to jangle their keys when they see me approach on a quiet street. It took me a while to figure it out - i believe they are people who have read articles on "how to fight" in FHM, which usually contain the tip: "get your keys in your hand".
And I presume the same articles add that when approaching someone on a quiet street who is jangling keys in his pocket, to gain the psychological upper hand, to crush him in fact, one should start humming contentedly Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz.
