"And you are a writer? "Yes, when I write." "And what do you write?" "I write whatever I happen to be writing at the moment I am writing it." "And what do you happen to be writing at the moment." "This."

It thrills me to the bone to witness such confidence from a writer. Some imbeciles believe that the only writers are those who have published a novel through a major publishing house and who regularly appear in Sunday supplements with their hand resting on their chin saying writerly things. In fact, a writer is someone who believes in and is proud of the process of writing - and who actually writes.
Thanks very much. Also the very notion that imaginative writing should have to flow into the form of the novel is a kind of tyranny. I doubt I could write a novel anyway, but whether I could or not, that kind of sustained form is anathema to my imagination/ personality, whatever.
