Naturalism, Supernaturalism

Jesus and the Woman from Samaria, an Orthodox icon painting of this scene. Just a quick thought: the general thought of the development or history of painting in the West is that the path of realism, particularly flourishing during the Renaissance is a progress in a positive sense, beyond what might be considered the comparative primitivism of the mindset of the painting above. Well, if this was intrinsically a movement into greater truth, why only a few hundred years later did it ‘progress’ back out of naturalism or realism and into further and further abstraction? And the answer, whatever it is, is much deeper than ‘Along came the camera’!
