What’s the point of a castle, a fortress? Well it’s the centre of a kingdom, a place of habitation and a stronghold, a defence against external forces. So in terms of this defence, the shoring up of one’s defences is key, for where will some enemy who comes along attack? Well, unless they’re stupid, they’ll seek out potential points of weakness, and that’s where they’ll focus their efforts - perhaps slyly, under cover of darkness. That’s their point of entry. It could involve traitors from within, some unknown entrance and passageway, weaknesses in its foundations, whatever. The enemy won’t say, “Well the rest of the fortress is strong. It wouldn’t really be fair to focus on the weak points. I’ll ignore them.”
Just like in a game of chess - if the opponents are of a decent standard, they can’t generally just go all out after the other’s king. It’s a process, though if the other’s choices and defence are particularly poor, then the more quickly and perhaps surprisingly direct can be the assault.
So anyway the stronghold must take itself seriously. It doesn’t say, “ What’s a point of weakness or two. Overall I’m in good shape.” And also the more solid the defences, the more powerful and dangerous in turn is that realm in its ability to go on the offence, and go after the enemy’s points of weakness.
