People Began Disappearing

People began disappearing and didn’t stop disappearing until they had finished. One day such and such a person would be there, the next the same such and such wouldn’t.
But that happens all the time: one is in a certain place, and then one isn’t. One has moved. That is all.
But here the there one is no longer is there in general, not there in particular. Absence from a previous spot has not been replaced with presence in a different spot. One was somewhere, now nowhere. And this was happening with ever greater regularity, with an increasing momentum.
To what to attribute disappearance? Lack of presence. Yes, but what to attribute lack of presence? – and don’t say disappearance.
Where were they going, these disappearing selves? But that’s just it – they weren’t, not that one could see, going anywhere. They were here - here in the general sense – and now they were not here, or there, but gone. There were no proofs, no suggestions, no indications. Just absence.
